JOSHUA CHUA'S JOURNAL
What are Fundamental Liberties? They are basically the rights that are being given to us as a human being to express ourselves but to a certain extend. There are in total nine fundamental liberties that are guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. This can be found from Article 5 to Article 13. The reason why I chose religion to discuss on is because I found that even though Malaysia is an Islamic country but it also allows others to practice their own belief in peaceful and harmony as stated in Article 3(1). However, the freedom of religion that is practice in Malaysia is not peremptory.
There are two cases that were being deliberate about in Question 2 “Do We Really Have the Rights and Freedom to Religion?” In the case of Lina Joy v Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah & Anor, I have found that the right to religion is only within the Syariah Court. Therefore, Muslims cannot officially covert out of Islam to receive any other faith no matter what. On the contrary, in the case of Re Susie Teoh, she was being allowed to embrace Islam. This shows that other races still allow their believers to vow to whatever religion that is their preference. Henceforth, this has also cause numerous cases of religious parochialism in our country Malaysia between the Muslims and the Christians, which is being briefly explained in Question 2 as well. This has definitely alert me as I am also a believer of Christ.
Besides that, the classes that I enjoyed the most is especially during tutorial sessions where we are given the opportunity to act out scenes from the cases, carry out charades and space race activities which allows us to know and understand the case better. Therefore, I really like her approach in learning, as there is a vast difference between our other modules where the learning is stereotype, as students are required to bring just paper and pen just to answer the questions that were being project onto the screen.
Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities outlines the core knowledge, skills, abilities and qualities that students will develop at Taylor’s University to meet the ever- changing demands of industry, community and globalisation. As for this module, I have developed and disciplined specific knowledge of law that will definitely be used when I stepped into the real world. Not only that, my communication skills has been improved by leaps and bounds through the oral presentation in relation to the topic Separation of Powers. Various tasks such as charades, games and drama acting have established my interpersonal and intrapersonal skills with my group mates. Digital literacy is the key part of learning in this module as our researches are mainly done through LexisNexis, an online database.
In the beginning of the semester, we were given three choices to pick as our electives. My first choice was another subject but they do not allow me to enrol into it, as there were no slots left. The reason why I did not took this module at first it is because that I felt this subject is going to be just like another law class, which we took in our first semester but I was wrong. This is because her positive energy will always bring joy and laughter to the class. There were some setbacks along the way but I am definitely thankful that Miss Saratha will always guide us through our assignment and provide us with great advice. This module is not my first choice but it will definitely be my right choice.
